Oh Solange. Fashion queen. Sassy singer. Kid sister of Beyonce. Singer of that creeper pop R&B hit “Losing You”. I’m so glad you came to Austin.
Tonight I got to see the one and only show for Solange Knowles, who hit the stage as the final act on Thursday at the Fader Fort. Her songwriting partner and producer Dev Hynes joined her on guitar and sass factor, as did a keys player, a drummer and two ace backing singers. But all eyes were on her.
Fashion: White pant suit, dressed in green leaves and strappy patent leather pumps.
Sound: Soulful R&B with an edge. This is totally feelgood music, and the sampler the drummer executes at just the right moment bring the slow jams into dance territory.
Players: Keys, drums/sampler, Dev on guitar, two backing singers. Solange out front showing why the Knowles sisters have vocal chords to die for.
Runner-up highlight: Her performance of Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness Is The Move”. She hit them high notes and then some. Incredible.
Highlight: “Losing You”. A huge crowd dancing to that sweet shuffle of a pop hit, and me feeling total joy the whole time. One of those rare, pure moments at SXSW where there’s no judgment, no critiquing, just dancing.
