The London three piece close their first Australian tour with a sublime set in front of a full tent at Splendour. With all songs building to powerful crescendos, they successfully threw off the ‘folk’ part of their ‘indie-folk’ tag. They left the stage with giant smiles, in contrast to the sad songs they’d just performed.
Instrument changes: Elena and Igor constantly swapped bass and guitar, with Igor pulling out a violin bow for the guitar mid-set.
Songs with references to death or dying: Up to 50% of the set.
The showstopper: A chilling, triumphant version of ‘Youth’ with the whole tent singing every word.
Most heartfelt lyrics: ‘If you’re still breathing you’re the lucky ones. ‘Cos most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs. Setting fire to our insides for fun…”
The closer: The frenetic ending of ‘Home’ then a promise to “see you again soon”.
